Featuring Knotwork by Sue Pennison
I thought it would be a good idea to occasionally feature knotters from around the world, who have visually impressed me. I find it is good to see other peoples work, so that you can incorporate some of their ideas into your work. So I thought I would start off this series with some of the wonderful decorative knotting and leather work by featured knotter, Sue Pennison, who is based in the UK.
Leather Journal and Canvas Case
It is not just a leather journal, but it also has a decorative canvas case to keep the journal safe.
Sue says that, leather-wrapped journal is embarking on an adventure this year, and it now has an extra layer of protection in the form of a linen canvas bag. It’s the simple square knotting adds a touch of decoration to the bag, while also ensuring that it will wear beautifully over time. I would love to see what the canvas looks like after accompanying Sue on a few adventures.
Four Strand Round Braid to Secure the Journal
I have to say, the Four Strand Round Braid or Sennit, is one of my favourite braids. I often use this sennit when I want a good decorative lanyard from my belt to my knife. In this case Sue has used the Four Strand Round Braid to secure the journal shut.
Four Strand Matthew Walker Knot
Finally the Four Stand Round Sennit has been finished off with a lovely Matthew Walker Knot.
Leather Journal Decorative Spine
The final exquisite finishing touch to the Journal is the spine. Some fine hand made cord has been used to complete the wonderful journal.
Rope Bow Fender
Look at this superb Bow Fender that Sue made. She says that the trick with making a good fender is to spend a good amount of time making sure that the inner core is smooth and even, which then makes covering go much easier.
Ditty Bag
I personally love a good Ditty Bag, as it shows off many skills in one item. The knots used in this ditty bag are starting at the top of the handle and working around; Ringbolt Hitching around the eye. Then Spanish Ring Knot? Matthew Walker Knot, Turks Head, Coachwhipping, Turks Head, Star Knot, It then looks like the leads are then secured using blue star knot buttons, going through half hitched grommets/eyes. Canvas has then been frayed and I am guessing tied together using square knots. Finally the rope base. Not only all of that, but the bag will have been hand stitched together.
