Midline Noose Knot
How to Tie the Tag Knot
The Tag Knot is also known as; the Double Ring Knot or the Double Running Knot. What makes this particular knot rather special, is that it can be tied in the bight of a rope. In other words, the Tag Knot can be tied midline of a rope and you do not need access to the ends of the rope. I think that another great feature of the Tag Knot is that the knot remains in tact, even when it is not actually securing an object.
Ashley’s Book of Knots
According to Ashley’s Book of Knots (ABoK) #1126 “A Double Ring Knot or Tag Knot, also called Double Running Knot, is used by lobster and crabmen around their pots. As it has no ends, its security is never in question. It is an exceedingly practical knot that is commonly tied in hand.” When you look at the diagram on how to tie this noose knot in the bight of a rope, it looks fairly straight forward and simple (see diagram below). However, there is a little knack in getting the knot to look as good as the finished knot as shown below.

In this very short video, you will learn how to tie the Tag Knot quickly and in the midline of a rope and without needing access to the end of the rope.
What is the Tag Knot Used For?
As mentioned above, Ashley does say that it is used by lobster and crabmen to secure their pots. If you use this knot, I would love to hear from you. Please to leave a comment on my video and I will reply to you. My only concern with this knot is if tied around a lobster pot, would the constant bobbing up and down loosen, or tighten the knot?
I am sure that as people become more aware of this knot, they will add it to their arsenal of knots!
