Directional Figure 8 Loop Inline Figure 8 Loop Single Bowline on the Bight
Directional (Inline) Figure 8 Loop: Nice nifty, easy to tie, little knot for tying a loop in the bight of a rope. Great little knot for lifting loads in one direction. However, if pulled in the wrong direction, this knot can capsize and turn into a slip knot. Always test direction of pull before loading.
Advantages of Using a Directional Figure of 8 Loop
The main advantage is that you can quickly and easily create a loop in the middle of a rope, without needing access to the ends of the rope. After the loop has been loaded, it is not too difficult to untie again
Disadvantages of Using a Directional Figure of 8 Loop
It is probably best to watch the video to see exactly what happens when you pull a Directional Figure of 8 loop in the wrong direction. If it is pulled in the wrong direction, the knot will collapse and you end up with a slip knot. So in other words, if you plan on using the Directional Figure of 8 Loop, test it to make sure that when you load the loop you are pulling in the right direction.
How to Tie the Directional Figure of 8 Loop
Ashley’s Book of Knots on the Figure of 8 Loop
The Figure of 8 Loop is mentioned in ABoK 1058 as the Single Bowline on the Bight and the decsription is as follows: “The Single Bowline on the Bight. This knot, in appearance at least, appears to have a better claim to the title than the others. It should be drawn up snugly and evenly and is not difficult to untie.”
Directional Figure of 8 Loop Alternative
I find it a very useful midline loop knot, just need to remember about the direction of pull. Perhaps if you are looking for a loop knot where the direction of pull does not matter, then the Alpine Butterfly Loop may be a better option.
